Bugged by organic waste?

Mar 2016. The Recycler, based in Tanzania, has recently been nominated as the winner of the IDEO Amplify Challenge, for finding innovative ways to deal with organic waste! The company have started using native insects to eat waste, and then dry out the insects as high-protein feed for chickens.

The Recycler is doing this on a commercial scale, but also plans to make a household bin available for anyone to buy in order to put their kitchen scraps for compost. This bin will naturally attract the insects who will lay eggs in the bin and eat the waste, crawling out and falling into a separate compartment. They can then be either fed to chickens, or even used to attract birds. This also produces nice compost and has been known to reduce housefly populations by up to 90%. The bins should be ready for sale by the end of this year.
